Larry Jordan’s 54 years as our favorite Auctioneer

The great quote by Maya Angelou says, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I couldn’t think of a more appropriate quote to describe Larry Jordan and the amount of people he has touched through BCL, and the incredible man he is. After nearly 54 years with the company, Larry has seen it all, from difficult times of strife in the industry and within BCL, to the most prosperous and stable years. There are few people in our industry in BC that Larry hasn’t touched in some way. His voice has been a staple of BCL auction yards for longer than I have been alive, and to have him sell your cattle or equipment has always been a guarantee of professionalism and a first class job of showcasing your product. Larry has never ‘just sold’ anything; he has always left both the buyer and seller feeling better than when they came. One of the best auctioneers that I have ever listened to, in a time where many of the old traditions are being left behind, Larry’s handshake has always been more than just a ‘hello how are you doing today partner’. A man of utmost class, his handshake is an unspoken promise of his word, and a promise of the integrity he has always conducted himself with. I have had the privilege of working closely with Larry for a number of years now and to say that he is so much more than the man behind the mic is an understatement. The immeasurable strength, quiet confidence and stability in rough and smooth waters, coupled with leadership and fortitude, has helped to keep us all pulling together. Our team says how Larry is the glue, always putting the needs of others above his own and helping to navigate so many situations with only the confidence and steadfast devotion that he can, grounding the younger generation and encouraging us to see things from different angles. A provider of facts and knowledge that many of us don’t know or don’t remember, Larry is the man when it comes to information. Don’t ever bet him on prices at a certain sale or what the market was like at a particular time, even if it’s 20 years ago, because I assure you, you will lose that bet. He will go pull out one of his coveted black books that we all want to get our hands on, and back it up. There is no one who has done more for BCL in their lifetime than Larry Jordan, and much like his close friend Wilf Smith was, he is a true company man. BC Livestock has always been number 1 in Larry’s life, right on par with his family. He has always worked as if BCL was his own company, feeling every bump and hardship along the way, the ups and downs, and the excitement and joy of a market like we are currently experiencing. If there was ever a high in the market and stability within an organization to celebrate an incredible career it is now. An immensely private person, it is not in Larry’s nature to want any fuss or attention brought to the fact that he will be taking a well earned step back from his auctioneering duties. While I’m sure I will catch some heat for this column, there is no one more deserving than Larry Jordan.
